A rich history...

The town’s history is still evident in its medieval street layout, historic buildings, and cultural significance. During the medieval period the town was known for its wool merchants and weavers, and its market played a significant role in the regional economy. Its prosperity continued through the Tudor and Stuart eras and whilst the weavers and merchants of old are long gone, the town’s Tudor timber-framed buildings are an essential part of its historical character.

Buildings of character...

Chief amongst the impressive architecture is St. Mary’s Church and the Hadleigh Guildhall. The former is a Grade I listed building dating back to the 15th century and remains one of the town’s oldest and most significant landmarks. The Hadleigh Guildhall is a stunning example of medieval timber-framed architecture.

Originally constructed as a place for trade and commerce, serving as a market hall where merchants and traders could conduct business, the preservation and maintenance of the Hadleigh Guildhall have been a priority for the local community.

Today, the Hadleigh Guildhall continues to be a focal point for cultural and community activities. It often hosts events, exhibitions, workshops, and other public functions that celebrate the town’s heritage and provide opportunities for local engagement.

A sense of community…

With a population of around 9,000 the town enjoys a close-knit community, which creates a strong sense of belonging and camaraderie among residents. A wide range of community events and activities held throughout the years contribute significantly to this sense of togetherness. This welcoming community is further felt in the popular pubs, cafés and restaurants situated in the town and surrounding villages.
